Michael Opriesnig has served as Secretary General of the Austrian Red Cross since 1 July 2019.

After graduating from the University of Vienna with a degree in the humanities, he began his professional career in the magazine and publishing sector.

In 1998, Opriesnig joined the Austrian Red Cross, where he headed the Marketing and Communications department until 2012. He subsequently served as Deputy Secretary General before taking on his current role.

In addition to his position at the Austrian Red Cross, Opriesnig is President of the Austrian Committee for Social Work (ÖKSA) and has been a member of the board of the charitable foundation Nachbar in Not since 2003.
